You and your high-top sneakers and your sailor tattoos

Okay, first of all...I have a new band to obsess over...
http://www.gaslightanthem.com/site/
A wonderful hybrid of Bruce Springsteen, Jesse Malin, and The Killers. Oh, three of my top four bands? AWESOME. They have fantastic lyrics.
Mary, this station is playing every sad song.
I remember like we were alive.
I heard it Sunday morn' from inside of these walls.
In a prison cell, where we spent those nights.

Come July, we'll ride the Ferris Wheel.
Go round and round and round.
And If you never let me go, well I will never let you down.

Secondly, what am I doing with my life?

Today I was sitting in my American Studies class, thinking about how much I love my American Studies class, and how much I've loved every American Studies class, and if I get my master's in American government, am I selling out and buying into a system that I don't support? I don't know. I think I might be. Sometimes I feel like I would be truer to myself if I got a degree in American Studies. I love everything about it. But I love political science too. And I'm good at it. If I get to grad school and hate it, I could figure something else out, I'm sure. But still, it was a really unnerving moment in my day. That feeling of "oh my god, what am I doing?" is never good. But at the same time, maybe its just because we're reading Kerouac right now, and not only is that at the essence of Kerouac's book, but On the Road is also one of my favorite books ever, so maybe I was just enjoying class a little more than usual.
which brings us to...
YES. I love Jack Kerouac. Yes, I'm a Republican. Yes, this may seem inconsistent, as Kerouac is often seen as one of those "leftist Bohemian hipster beatniks." But, Kerouac didn't really give a shit about the government, at all, and he also really liked Eisenhower. So don't look at me funny for loving Kerouac. He is actually one of my boyfriends.

O RLY???

"Hey guys, I have an idea to fix the recession!!! Let's allocate $50 million to fund abortions. Internationally!"

That'll do it.

I mean, I'm pro-choice and everything, but REALLY? Why are we funding abortions in other countries? That literally makes me sick. How about allocating that money to something we would actually benefit from, like student loan debt forgiveness. Or, how about not spending like a bunch of amateurs?

Everybody has a reason to begin again.

"Girls are taught a lot of stuff growing up. If a guy punches you he likes you. Never try to trim your own bangs and someday you will meet a wonderful guy and get your very own happy ending. Every movie we see, Every story we're told implores us to wait for it, the third act twist, the unexpected declaration of love, the exception to the rule. But sometimes we're so focused on finding our happy ending we don't learn how to read the signs. How to tell from the ones who want us and the ones who don't, the ones who will stay and the ones who will leave. And maybe a happy ending doesn't include a guy, maybe... it's you, on your own, picking up the pieces and starting over, freeing yourself up for something better in the future. Maybe the happy ending is... just... moving on. Or maybe the happy ending is this, knowing after all the unreturned phone calls, broken-hearts, through the blunders and misread signals, through all the pain and embarrassment you never gave up hope."
-He's Just Not That Into You

Oh, Bama...

"I ask this Congress to send me the bipartisan legislation that bears the name of Senator Orrin Hatch as well as an American who has never stopped asking what he can do for his country - Senator Edward Kennedy."
Hahahahahaha. Thanks for making my day. Ted Kennedy, really? Yeah, he's sure done a lot for our country...

"We must also be vigilant in upholding the values our troops defend."
This is true. However, since you have yet to visit them, do you really know what these values are?

"I believe the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it."
Okay, but we didn't invent the automobile. Karl Benz invented the automobile. He was German, ja? Look, a gaffe! Now let me look around at major news outlets on the internet and see if I can find anything about that...hmm, still looking...nope. Oh, big shocker. If that was Bush who said that, CNN, MSNBC, the New York Times, etc would all be like "OMG GUYS!!!!!!!!!!111!!!!!! DUBYA TOTES THINKS DAT AMURICANS INVENTED THE AUTOMOBILE!!!!!1111111!!!!! WUT AN IDIOT!!! HE TOTES ONLY WENT 2 YALE BECUZ HIS DADDY HAZ MONIES!!!!!!!11111111!11!!!!!!!!!!!

And I am so sick of all of the FDR comparisons. "OMG LAST NITE WUZ LIEK A FIRESIDE CHAT!!!11!!1 OBAMA IZ DA BEST PRESIDENT SENSE FDR!" Okay, remember that time FDR wasn't actually a good president? No, you don't? You weren't taught that in schools? Let's have a look...
  • FDR promised voters he would balance the budget, then proceeded to spend more than any other president before him, during the country's worst economic crisis, ever.
  • Pearl Harbor happened either as a result of his complete and utter incompetence or his willingnes to sacrifice countless American lives for political expediency.
  • The New Deal? Oh yeah, that did nothing to fix the economy. In fact, unemployment was at its lowest in the late 30's, years after the New Deal programs had been implemented. WWII, not the New Deal, ended the Great Depression.
  • Expanded the powers of the presidency to dictatorial proportions. His court-packing scheme was deplorable, at best. His willingness to violate the term limit precedent, despite the fact that his health was faltering? Terrible.

By the way, my abs are already killing me from Pilates yesterday.

Yay.

Just watched an interview with Blake from the Broadway Bears event.

"I just want to stay in NYC for awhile."

Good. Because now it seems possible that I could run into him and subsequently marry him. I mean, it's a big city, but I ran into him randomly once before, plus we like similar music so we could end up at the same concerts and stuff. I mean, part of me wants him to join the tour, preferably before May, so I can see him again. The other part of me needs him in my city.

My life plans are so realistic.

Boreddd

Theoretically, I shouldn't be. I mean, my computer is fixed, so this should mean countless hours of listening to music and watching youtube videos, right? Wrong. First of all, it has taken two hours for iTunes to download, and it's not even 40% of the way there yet. Terrible. So there goes my plan of putting my music back on and renting movies from the iTunes store. So, youtube has absolutely every video I've ever wanted to watch, right? Right. But youtube is down for maintenance. Wonderful. So now I'm on this movie watching kick, so I'm all like "ohhh I'll download Limewire and get movies from there!" Good plan, right? Limewire downloads in 15 minutes. Perfect. The movie, on the other hand? Well, according to the dialogue box, it has 6 hours left. So now I'm up shit's creek, because all night, I've needed some Justin Long in my life. Let me demonstrate...

I mean, he's the perfect mix of dorky and really really attractive. And no, I'm not jumping on the bandwagon because he's gotten pretty popular recently. I've liked him since Dodgeball, so there. Sure, "He's Just Not That Into You" reminded me how much I love him. He was soo freaking adorable in that movie. See?
Basically, I would like him to give me relationship advice, then come sweep me off my feet.
I also think that he and Drew Barrymore were an adorable couple. The rumors that he's dating Tila Tequila on the other hand? Not okay. And I'm not saying this because I'm jealous, because we all know I'm marrying Blake Daniel. But Tila Tequila, as amusing as she is, is disgusting.
iTunes is now 45% downloaded. Awesome. My movie is 22% downloaded.
Speaking of percentages, 9OTH PERCENTILE FOR ANALYTICAL WRITING. GO ME. I KICK ASS. Sorry for that. I'm proud of myself. I don't think I believe in myself enough, ever, and if I want to brag in my blog about the fact that I scored better than 90 out of 100 GRE takers on that section, I think I'm more than entitled to do so. 90 90 90 90 90 90 90!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!
I'm done now.
Also, I had a wonderful couple of days with my boys. They're amazing. Matthew=hilarious. Luke=the cutest baby in the history of the world. Matthew's smile when he saw me on Saturday morning made me forget about the hell of the last three or so weeks and made me feel like I was on top of the world. It's nice, because I know kids don't fake that stuff.
Haircut/eyebrow wax tomorrow. I'm so excited. I need a change. Or at least something that will make me feel better about myself.

Thursday, February 12, 2009

Yeah, it's official.

I'm the Anti-Midas. Everything I touch turns to crap.

Literally, five minutes after I updated earlier, I'm typing away on my study guide for History of England, and my computer freezes, so I restart it, and as it turns on, it makes the dreaded beeping noise, then goes "system error: no devices found." Awesome. If that doesn't spell hard drive crash, I don't know what does.

So I go to take my midterm. I come back, turn it on, same message. So I call Dell. Yeah. My hard drive crashed. Awesome. But they're sending me a new one within three to five business days, so that's good.

But we have some things to be thankful for.
1. My personal statement and updated resume are thankfully in my email.
2. 95% of my music is on my iPod. Not a huge deal with stuff I have on CD, but I have actually gotten a decent amount of stuff online recently, so that's good. The only annoyance: the Laura Marling CD and Bruce Springsteen EP that I bought on iTunes about three hours before this happened and hadn't gotten on my iPod yet. That's $14 of music. Oh well.
3. WARRANTIES. Not being charged for anything, so this also good.

Although, there are also some annoyances.
1. I have to reinstall everything...AIM, iTunes, my anti-virus stuff.
2. Now I won't have my computer for a great deal of break, and I was kind of relying on having it due to the need to research all of my papers.
3. The lost Bruce and Laura Marling. Maybe there is some way I can sign into iTunes from Kayleigh's computer and burn them onto CDs or something.
4. My bookmarks online. Many of them pertained to my research projects. Oh well.

Such is my week.

...deep breath.

So, my midterm filled day of fun didn't start off on the right foot, as I woke up at 7:45 for my 8:15 class, which does not equal enough time to shower, at all. So I brushed my teeth, washed my face, threw on jeans, a sweatshirt, and spritzed myself with body spray, than ran over to midterm number one.

I did okay. It took me about fifteen minutes to gather my thoughts for it, but we had an hour and a half and Dr. Mitchell said that this exam usually only takes people an hour. I was done at 9:20. Not enough time to shower before Law at 9:55, but enough time for a bagel and a latte (aka carbs and caffeine...both necessary on days like this). But I think it turned out pretty well. It was an in-class essay and open text, so that helps.

So Law and the Courts rolls around. We're not allowed to volunteer answers anymore, so my new strategy is to stare Twombly down when he's trying to decide who to call on if I know the answer. This strategy worked today, and I managed to pull out some strange, random Constitutional concept that I didn't even know I knew. One point, me. And also, Jeremy told me that my INS v. Chadha brief was very helpful to him today. So that was good, because I would hate to screw over my group members.

Then I studied for midterm number two. Then I had my meeting with Dr. Shephard at 1 so we could go over Senior Seminar stuff. He said I was on track and my topic is compelling and researchable, so that was good.

I've been studying ever since. This is my halfway ten-minute break. I will soon be eating Easy Mac and studying the post-1066 English monarchs. Fun times. Actually, I hate my history major. But I realized while studying that I know more than I thought I did. I might be okay? And if not, at least I'm good at making things up. I mean, I got a 10/12 on a pop quiz when honestly (sorry, Dad) I hadn't even touched the textbook the night before, because I was sick. So I might be able to do this exam. I just feel bad because this class has not been my priority at all this term.

So basically, this exam is at 3:20 and will end by 4:50. And then it's basically break. I have four problems to do for Research Methods tomorrow, and that is it, so since I have to tutor tonight and no one will come (best. job. ever.), I can probably get ahead on stuff that's due after break, like On the Road.

The other good news? First draft of my personal statement? Done. Updated resume? Done. Dr. Twombly has the necessary stuff for my first recommendation. I'm meeting with Dr. Mitchell tomorrow morning. I highly doubt he wouldn't do it. I mean, I essentially skipped one of his classes once because I felt sad, and I told him I just needed a personal day, and he told me that I had earned enough credibility points with him to do that, which leads me to believe he respects me as a student. So that should be done by tomorrow. Those are the important two, as CUNY Brooklyn only requires two, and that application is due March 1st, and the others aren't due until March 15, so I can deal with the third one after break, once I figure out who is writing the third one, haha. So I'm finally on track with grad school stuff.

Also, Dr. Twombly might be doing research Term III, and he wants me to help him as my internship, so that will be good.

I think things might be starting to look up.

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my bed the most.

Tomorrow I have two midterms. This is fun. It means I should probably go to bed. Problem is, I have no idea where my bed is, as it currently looks like this...

I dub this the textbook/mail/handouts and study guides/my whiteboard that fell off my door today clusterfuck.
This is where I've been sitting all night, writing papers and briefing court cases. And yes, that is my hair dryer, and no, I haven't moved it since this morning, and yes, I've been sitting on it. It's fine.
Usually, I have this theory that I'm saner when my room is clean. However, my room is clean right now. My bed, that's a different story. And the moral of that story is that I need to be in my bed, but I don't think there is room for me.

Hahahaha.

Oh well, it's not like I can feel any worse. At this point, everything is laughable.

Also, there have been three foods that I have found satisfying in the last week: sushi, cashews, and Smartfood popcorn. Hmm. And Peanut M+Ms. I wish I could only eat like, vegetables and hummus, but no. Or really, I just wish we had sushi on campus. It's like ever since New Year's I've been on this sushi kick.

Anyway, Demetri Martin's TV show premieres tomorrow night. This excites me.

Also, I really really really miss Spring Awakening. It's starting to hit me that it's not actually there anymore.

Also, I have recently decided that I believe in astrology. Legitimate astrology, obviously, because clearly the stuff in newspapers is just made up. But here's the thing: Mercury is in retrograde right now. Let me explain. Basically, three times a year, Mercury turns retrograde, which makes everyone's emotions and coping tactics run haywire. This is was astrology.com has to say about things: The key issue here is one of focus. Mercury's retro phase tends to bring unforeseen changes and blockages, but the aggravation and frustration that many of us experience during these periods is often due to our own inability to roll with the punches. Is this due to our ego-fixation? Mercury sets out to restructure our thinking processes and for many of us this is painful and frustrating. Moreover, these experiences reveal flaws in our internal organisation as well as our external planning, which can make us feel foolish and inadequate. I mean, this is dead on. But the good news Mercury is no longer in retrograde on February 21st, so my life should get better then, until May 26 when Mercury moves back into retrograde. Oh, and to prove my point more, guess when the last time Mercury was in retrograde? October and November!!! Guess the last time I felt miserable? Exactly. But the good thing is that this is also a time for new beginnings.

Oh, and also, where the hell does the President of College Dems get off talking shit about me at their meetings? Have I dragged my feet a little with bowling? Yes. However, I have fifty billion classes with this girl, so she should know by now that I'm pretty sick. Sorry that arranging a bowling date with you hasn't been my priority, since I can barely climb out of my bed and make it to class. She was there when I handed Dr. Imai my plan of care from the health center, and she was there when Melissa was asking me what the health center put me on. Furthermore, I think it's really unprofessional for the president of an organization to do that, and I can honestly say that anytime a member of my club has attempted to say anything negative about a member of her club, I have effectively and efficiently shut them the hell up. Yes, we may be in competing political parties, but we're also peers, and thus should respect each other. But Jeremy and I would assume Sam have my back, so that's good. Anyway, since she arbitrarily set a date that doesn't work for us, we're going to need to change that, but I don't need anymore drama in my life, so I think I'm just going to talk to Dr. Twombly directly. And then be like "O HAI, CONTROL MICHELLE. THNX." Unacceptable.

Oh, and February 28th, I have a date with Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter.

4 more days. Failroad, much?

And it's a damn good thing, since I can't handle life anymore, apparently.

I don't know what happened. Last week I was possibly more upbeat than I've been in awhile, and all of a sudden, it came crashing down. I don't know if it's the sinus infection and overall exhaustion or what.

Tonight it took me four hours to write a three page paper. I'm never, ever like that. Three pages? Half an hour, maybe.

My application deadlines completely snuck up on me. I'm nowhere near being done with my personal statement. Honestly, I can't even start it. Maybe I'm not ready for grad school. Maybe I should take a year off, but then what would I do? I'm not going home again, that's for sure.

I'm so freaking tired and I can't sleep anymore, except during the day when I actually need to be productive.

I feel like all of my friends hate me. This is unfounded and unreasonable, and it makes me want to punch myself in the face for even thinking it.

I'm going to fail every single midterm I have this week because I don't have the focus to study.

I wish I could go home like, right now. No joke. I don't know how I'm going to make through four more days, especially if they're all like today.

And I'm so sick of everyone asking me if I'm okay. I can't go anywhere without being accosted.

I have to wake up in four hours. Fail.

I feel like I haven't laughed in like, a week. This sucks, because I really like laughing. And sleeping, but I don't do that anymore either.

So anyway, tomorrow I'm going to take control, at least of the grad school situation, and finish my personal statement. This will be achieved by moving into the library for the evening. Then by Wednesday, recommendations will hopefully be set, since everyone is waiting on that, and I can get on with my life.

Now, where the hell is my iPod?

On the plus side, it was a low key but fun weekend. Last night I went out for sushi with Lauren. It was nice to get away from campus and the food on campus. And Hans Herzl-Betz was there! Haven't seen that skank since last term. Most. Awkward. Person. Ever. He pretended to not see us. And then we went to our dorm event, and then Kayleigh and I watched Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist for the fiftieth time since Tuesday. It makes my life. And today I slept in, cleaned, did laundry, and relaxed. Then went to the hockey game with Amanda, Steph, and Kayleigh. We lost, but it was a good game, and it made me hate Hobart a little (sorry, Jenn). I mean, the fans were assholes and the players were dirty. And then we went to see "He's Just Not That Into You." A.MA.ZING. I loved it (even though it kind of hit close to home), and would see it again in a heartbeat. Tomorrow I really need to be productive, plus I have Senate and tutoring. Always a blast.

Oh. My. God.

Let me just recount a conversation I had with Dr. Mitchell today.

Him: Heather, you'll be at Phi Alpha Theta inductions tonight, right?
Me: Oh, of course! It'll be the highlight of my year.
Him: You're an officer though, aren't you? MAJOR brownie points with Myra.
Me: Yeah, well she hates me, so I need all the brownie points I can get.
Him: She hates you?
Me: Well, I'm not sure. I don't know how much she knows about what happened last term.
Him: I don't think she knows anything. All I've heard her say about you is that she wishes there were more students like you.

...holy shit. This is DR. MYRA C. GLENN, a FULL Professor of American History, the most tenured, most established professor at Elmira. This is the hardest professor at Elmira. To prove my point: http://www.facebook.com/group.phpsid=340ef36b15ba6ccb8a93d44cd8fdc8e5&gid=2203053563#. I can't believe she said that.
This is the kind of thing that completely negates every negative thought I've had about myself and my academic performance in the last few days.

O HAI

Remember that time I got pit tickets to see Bruce in Hershey?

BECAUSE IT JUST HAPPENED.

.
Yeah, see that circle? I'll be somewhere in there.
F-ing Right.
This is going to be the best night of my life, except maybe January 18th, 2009.

Oh, wow.

If I live to be half as awesome as Bruce Springsteen, I will be a happy girl.
